Medicare is a government-based health insurance program that allows specific population groups to receive free or discounted healthcare access. People ages 65 and over, with End-Stage Renal Disease, and those under 65 with certain disabilities are eligible for Medicare benefits. Individuals who currently receive Social Security benefits will automatically be enrolled in the Medicare program.
If you are approaching the age of 65, you can expect to receive a Medicare welcome packet about three months before your 65th birthday. With this welcome packet, you will have all of the information you need to enroll in Medicare Parts A and B. Because this process can be lengthy, confusing, and require many decisions, Thomas Family Insurance is here to help.
Knowing about the four types of Medicare beforehand may help you understand the process better.
Medicare Part A
Medicare Part A is an essential and automatic part of the Medicare benefits you are eligible for. This is otherwise known as hospital insurance, and it covers processes like inpatient and nursing, hospice, and home healthcare. The majority of the time, you won’t pay for this part.
Medicare Part B
Medicare Part B is the second part of the essential Medicare benefits. It covers medically necessary services like traditional doctor visits and outpatient care, home healthcare, medical equipment when necessary, and preventative services and screenings. Premium costs may be required for Medicare Part B.
Medicare Part C
Medicare Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, combines benefits covered in Medicare Parts A and B but is implemented through private insurance companies. This plan covers all of the benefits you receive with Medicare Part A and Part B combined in one program. Additional benefits like vision and dental coverage may also be offered.
Medicare Part D
Medicare Part D covers prescriptions and is an optional portion of the Medicare program for an additional cost. It can be purchased as an additional feature with Medicare Parts A and B. Prescription drug coverage can also be sometimes included in a Medicare Advantage plan.
